Poorly controlled asthma and COPD are not inevitable. Many patients managed in primary care are prescribed appropriate medication but never receive the detailed review spirometry interpretation, inhaler technique assessment, trigger identification and comorbidity management that is essential for meaningful, long-term disease control. Dr Sundeep Kaul provides specialist assessment and optimisation for patients with asthma, COPD and other chronic airway conditions, building personalised management plans that reduce symptom burden, prevent exacerbations and improve quality of life.
What Are Asthma & COPD?
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway condition characterised by variable airflow obstruction, airway hyperresponsiveness, and episodes of wheeze, chest tightness, breathlessness and cough — often triggered by allergens, exercise, cold air or respiratory infections. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive condition, most commonly caused by smoking, in which airflow is permanently reduced due to emphysema and small airways disease. Both conditions are treatable and, with the right specialist input, manageable to a level that allows patients to live with significantly less restriction. Other airway diseases including bronchiectasis and occupational airway conditions — are also assessed and managed within Dr Kaul’s practice.
Symptoms May Include
- Persistent or recurrent breathlessness
- Wheeze particularly on exertion or at night
- Chronic productive cough
- Chest tightness
- Frequent chest infections or exacerbations
- Reduced exercise tolerance
- Symptoms worsening in cold air, smoke or dust
- Difficulty controlling symptoms despite inhaler use
Diagnostic Assessment
Your consultation may include:
- Full symptom history and exacerbation pattern review
- Spirometry with bronchodilator reversibility testing
- FeNO measurement identifying eosinophilic airway inflammation in asthma
- Full lung function testing including diffusion capacity (DLCO)
- Inhaler technique assessment
- Allergy and trigger factor review
- Chest X-ray or CT chest where indicated
- Blood tests including eosinophil count and IgE levels
Treatment Approach
Treatment plans are personalised to each patient’s disease pattern, lifestyle and comorbidities and may include:
- Inhaler optimisation and technique training
- Step-up or step-down of therapy based on current control
- Personalised asthma or COPD action plan
- Biological therapy assessment for severe asthma
- Pulmonary rehabilitation referral for COPD
- Smoking cessation support and referral
- Trigger avoidance strategies
- Co-ordinated care with primary care and community teams
Why Early Assessment Matters
Uncontrolled asthma and COPD lead to preventable exacerbations, hospital admissions and accelerated lung function decline. Specialist review even for patients already on inhaler therapy frequently identifies treatable factors that primary care assessment has not addressed. Early optimisation protects lung function and reduces long-term disease burden.
